Frequently Asked Questions

Identity verification

Why do I need to verify my identity when sending money online?

All financial institutions, including Western Union, are required to collect additional identity information to know their customers better. When we understand who is sending money to whom, we can help protect your money from being used for illegal activities.

Note: You must be at least 18 years old to send or receive money with Western Union.

We might ask you for additional details to verify your identity when sending money online.

How can I verify my identity?

You can verify your identity through video chat. If you choose the video identification option, you will be connected with a trained agent that will help you get your identity verified.

First you will receive a PIN number via SMS or email to open a video session, then you will be asked to show the front and the back of your ID to the agent. A photo of your face will be taken as well to make sure it matches your ID picture. Once video verification is completed, you will be able to send money online right away.

Keep in mind that your identity will need to be verified. If you have already sent a money transfer at an agent location in Singapore, do register with the same ID on the Western Union app; Western Union will automatically match your data.

If your full name—first name, middle name and surname—ID type, ID number, and date of birth matches, you will receive a profile approval and will be able to send money online. It may take a few minutes to match your data. If your data does not match you will be guided to use a video identification option. If video identification is not available due to operating hours, then you would have an option to stage your transfer online and visit an agent location and send money in person.
